A Journey into the World of Magic in Devon

When I relocated to Devon from Manchester in 2008, I decided to pursue my passion for magic professionally.
This journey led me to discover two remarkable local magic clubs: the Devon Magic Circle in Paignton and The Exonian Magical Society (EMS) in Exeter. Both of these societies have played an invaluable role in my development as a magician.

The Exonian Magical Society: A Pillar of Magic in Exeter

Founded in 1936, The Exonian Magical Society (EMS) has been a cornerstone of the Exeter magic community for many years. With a mission to foster interest in the art of magic, EMS provides a welcoming environment for both seasoned professionals and enthusiastic hobbyists.
One of the society's most notable figures is George Arrowsmith, a founding member of EMS. His dedication to magic extended beyond Exeter, as he also established The Pentacle Club (originally known as the Cambridge University Magic Society).
Mr. Arrowsmith's contributions have had a lasting impact on the magic fraternity, both locally and nationally.
Under the long-standing guidance of President George Blake, who has served for the past 12 years, EMS continues to flourish. The society convenes on the fourth Thursday of each month (excluding July, August, and December) at the Heavitree Social Club. These meetings feature a diverse program, including lectures, themed evenings (covering children's magic, close-up magic, and card magic), and workshops in related performing arts such as circus skills, puppetry, and balloon modeling. These gatherings offer members invaluable opportunities for learning, performing, and sharing their love for magic.

Engaging with the Community Through Magic
Beyond their internal activities, EMS is deeply committed to community engagement. The society frequently presents fundraising shows for local charities, schools, and other organizations, using their magical talents to give back and enrich the local community. This tradition of service reflects EMS's dedication not only to the art of magic but also to making a positive difference in the region.
Currently, the society is actively fundraising for their 90th-anniversary magic convention, which will take place in 2026 and is anticipated to be their largest event yet. To further their community engagement and provide valuable stage time for both amateur and professional magicians, EMS is reaching out to local organizations and charities to host joint "50/50" events. These evenings would feature some of the area's top performers from both the close up cabaret magic scene or children's entertainment sector, The profits from ticket and ancillary sales being divided equally between the host charity and the magic society.
If you are interested in learning more about these potential fundraising events or the Exonian Magical Society in general, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
